NDINYIKA PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Challenge

Facilities in rural schools have very limited resources and overcrowding is mainly a problem as schools do not have sufficient classrooms. Ndinyika Primary school currently has 3 poorly equipped classrooms catering for 348 pupils. This means pupils from different class/study levels share rooms. The younger children aged 4 - 6 years are taught under a tree.

The teachers travel about 8 miles to get to school. There is a pledge from the government to send teachers to the school with the condition that the school provides accommodation for prospective teachers. This is almost an impossible situation as they do not have the structure or resources to make this a reality.

Our Objectives

To contribute to quality education for the pupils by

  • - Building classes to reduce overcrowding

  • - Building two houses for teachers accommodation

The Need

  • - Construction of two classes at the cost of £6,800 each (£13,600)

  • - Construction of two houses to accommodate teachers at £6560 each (£13,120)
.

Our Approach

We seek out partnerships, sponsorships and donations from companies and businesses. Our team of volunteers plan fundraising events and we have a ‘Go fund me’ account to seek donations from public.

We are also seeking to collaborate with organisations who have self funded volunteers that travel to rural areas to teach. We hope this would give relief to the teachers at Nadosoito nursery school who are already very thinly stretched. We also seek to collaborate with colleges and universities who may have students that are interested in volunteering during a gap year.

The Sower Media Trust, our Dar Es Salaam based branch, will pay regular supervisory visits to ensure progress on the development of the project.
